What is the Reference Kit? The kit is expected to stimulate, not to limit creativity (like reading science journals in a lab is stimulating, not limiting research.) An early exposure to the culture of scientific citations, and developing a responsible attitude toward contrasting own contribution from earlier results and making thus own work truly novel and original, are assumed to be helpful experiences.

The basic goals of the kit are not at all in providing a “start-to-finish manual”, but in encouraging participants to

• regard their work critically and be conversant with what has been done before,
• distinguish between own contribution and general knowledge,
• be skeptical in embedding projects into the standards of professional research,
• and be attentive in not “re-inventing the wheel”.

Even if linked from iypt.org, the kit is not an official release of the IYPT, and should under no circumstances be considered as a collection (even unofficial) of “musts” or “instructions” for whatever competition. Source of those files is http://kit.ilyam.org/.
